Jewellery Care Guide
At Vianne Jewellery, each piece is carefully crafted to be worn, loved and treasured for years to come. Proper care will help preserve the beauty of your jewellery, gemstones and precious metal finishes.
We recommend removing your jewellery before any activity involving water, chemicals or heavy use of the hands, as these are among the most common causes of wear and damage. By following the guidance below, you can help keep your jewellery looking its best for longer.
General Jewellery Care
To help prolong the life of your jewellery:
- Put your jewellery on last after applying perfume, makeup, hairspray, sunscreen and lotions.
- Avoid contact with water and other liquids wherever possible.
- Remove jewellery before showering, bathing, swimming, using hot tubs or saunas.
- Remove jewellery before washing dishes, cleaning or using household chemicals.
- Remove rings, bracelets and bangles before hand-intensive activities such as gardening, exercising, lifting weights, DIY projects, housework or carrying heavy objects.
- Avoid wearing jewellery while sleeping.
- Protect jewellery from knocks, impacts and rough surfaces.
- Store jewellery separately to prevent scratching and tangling.
- Regularly check clasps, chains and stone settings for signs of wear.
Gold Vermeil Jewellery
Our gold vermeil jewellery features a thick layer of 18k gold plated over sterling silver, offering the look and feel of solid gold at a more accessible price point.
To maintain your gold vermeil jewellery:
- Avoid direct contact with water, perfume, lotions, hand sanitiser and household chemicals.
- Remove before showering, swimming, exercising and washing dishes.
- Remove rings before activities involving frequent hand use or friction.
- Gently wipe with a soft, dry cloth after wearing.
- Store in a jewellery box or pouch when not in use.
Gold vermeil jewellery will naturally experience gradual wear over time depending on frequency of wear, skin chemistry and exposure to moisture, chemicals and friction. Rings typically show signs of wear more quickly than necklaces, earrings and bracelets due to their greater exposure to daily activities.
With proper care, the finish can remain beautiful for many years. Over time, professional replating may be recommended to refresh the appearance of frequently worn pieces.
Sterling Silver Jewellery
Sterling silver may naturally tarnish over time when exposed to air, moisture and environmental factors.
To care for sterling silver jewellery:
- Store in a dry, airtight environment when possible.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to water and chemicals.
- Polish gently with a silver polishing cloth when required.
- Remove before swimming, exercising or household cleaning.
Regular cleaning will help maintain the brightness of your sterling silver jewellery. Depending on wear and environmental exposure, occasional professional polishing may be beneficial to restore its original shine.
Gemstone Jewellery
Natural gemstones vary in hardness and durability and should always be handled with care.
To protect your gemstone jewellery:
- Avoid dropping jewellery onto hard surfaces.
- Remove jewellery before sports or activities that may cause impact.
- Clean gently using warm water, mild soap and a soft cloth.
- Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaning products.
- Store separately from other jewellery to prevent scratching.
Different gemstones have varying hardness levels and may require additional care.
Opal Care
Opal is a unique gemstone that requires a little extra care to maintain its beauty. Many opals are naturally hydrophane, meaning they can absorb moisture and liquids. Exposure to water, oils, perfumes, lotions, cleaning products and other substances may temporarily alter the appearance of the stone.
To help protect your opal jewellery:
- Remove your jewellery before showering, swimming, bathing or washing dishes.
- Avoid contact with perfumes, lotions, cosmetics, hairspray and household cleaning products.
- Do not wear opal jewellery during exercise, gardening or other activities where it may be exposed to moisture or impact.
- Store your jewellery in a cool, stable environment away from direct sunlight, excessive heat and sudden temperature changes.
- Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth only.
If an opal absorbs moisture and appears cloudy or changes colour, this is often temporary. Allow the stone to dry naturally in a cool, dry environment. Avoid using heat or direct sunlight to speed up the drying process.
Keeping Your Gemstones Sparkling
Over time, gemstones may appear less brilliant due to a build-up of oils, lotions, soap residue, cosmetics, perspiration and everyday dirt. This is particularly noticeable in transparent gemstones and moissanite, where residue can accumulate behind the stone and reduce the amount of light passing through it.
In most cases, a gemstone that appears dull simply needs cleaning. Regular gentle cleaning can help restore the sparkle and brilliance of your jewellery.
For routine cleaning, use warm water, mild soap and a soft brush to carefully clean around and underneath the stone where residue is most likely to collect. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a lint-free cloth.
Ring Care
Rings are typically subject to more daily wear than any other type of jewellery. Because they are worn on the hands, they are more likely to come into contact with hard surfaces, water, chemicals and everyday activities that can cause damage over time.
To help protect your ring:
- Remove your ring before exercising, gardening, lifting weights, housework, DIY projects or other hand-intensive activities.
- Avoid wearing your ring while swimming, showering, washing dishes or using cleaning products.
- Take extra care when handling heavy objects, as accidental knocks can chip, crack or loosen gemstones, and may damage settings or metalwork.
- Store rings separately when not being worn to prevent scratches.
Over time, normal wear can gradually loosen stone settings and prongs. We recommend having your ring professionally inspected every 6 months, particularly if worn daily, to ensure gemstones remain secure and to identify any signs of wear before they become a problem.
If you notice a loose stone, bent prong or any damage to your ring, discontinue wearing it and seek professional advice as soon as possible to prevent further damage or potential stone loss.
Understanding Normal Wear & Tear
Rings naturally experience more wear and tear than any other type of jewellery because they are worn on the hands and exposed to daily activities. Contact with hard surfaces, frequent hand use, washing, household tasks, exercise and everyday friction can gradually affect the appearance of your jewellery over time.
As a result, jewellery may develop fine scratches, scuff marks and signs of wear through normal use. Gemstones may also become chipped, cracked or damaged if subjected to accidental impact or improper care. These forms of wear and damage are a natural part of owning and enjoying jewellery and should not be considered manufacturing defects.
For gold vermeil jewellery, regular wear may gradually cause the gold finish to fade, particularly on areas that come into frequent contact with surfaces or experience friction.
For sterling silver jewellery, everyday wear, exposure to moisture, perspiration, cosmetics and environmental factors may cause the metal to appear dull or develop tarnish over time. Regular cleaning and occasional polishing can help restore its appearance.
Individual factors such as skin chemistry, perspiration levels, skincare products, perfumes, hand sanitiser and frequency of wear can all influence how quickly these changes occur.
Depending on wear, some jewellery may benefit from professional polishing, refinishing or replating over time to maintain its appearance.
Moissanite Jewellery
Moissanite is an exceptionally durable gemstone, making it suitable for everyday wear.
To maintain its brilliance:
- Clean regularly using warm water, mild soap and a soft brush.
- Rinse thoroughly and dry with a lint-free cloth.
- Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaning products.
- Store separately from softer gemstones to prevent scratching.
- Have stone settings checked periodically if worn daily.
Moissanite is known for its exceptional brilliance and fire. If your moissanite appears less sparkly over time, this is often due to a build-up of oils, lotions or everyday residue rather than any change to the gemstone itself. Regular cleaning will help restore its exceptional sparkle.
Pearl Jewellery
Pearls are delicate organic gemstones and require extra care.
To keep your pearls looking beautiful:
- Put pearl jewellery on last and remove it first.
- Avoid contact with perfume, hairspray, cosmetics, lotions and household chemicals.
- Wipe pearls gently with a soft cloth after each wear.
- Do not soak pearls in water or use jewellery cleaning solutions.
- Store separately from other jewellery to prevent scratches.
With proper care, pearls can remain beautiful for generations.
Jewellery Storage
Proper storage is one of the most effective ways to protect your jewellery.
We recommend:
- Storing jewellery in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
- Keeping pieces separated to prevent scratching and tangling.
- Using soft pouches or lined jewellery boxes.
- Avoiding humid environments such as bathrooms.
When travelling, store jewellery in individual compartments or pouches for added protection.
Professional Cleaning & Repairs
Even with proper care, jewellery may require occasional maintenance.
Depending on frequency of wear and the type of jewellery, professional cleaning, polishing, refinishing or replating may be recommended from time to time to help maintain the appearance of your jewellery.
